This is different from using it to set the base of the toilet. Plumber's putty has a petroleum base to it so if you left it in there for years, it would of definitely turned yellow over time. Mar 11, 2008 · The putty will already keep the water out of the underside of the sink , if placed in properly. PIPE DOPE, also called pipe thread paste, is what to use. I think grout would look best and be most durable but may be hard to remove from the tile later when I change toilets. The new drain is packaged with a rubber gasket, and the instructions seem to show that the gasket goes underneath the drain lip (on top of the tub).
